Zena O

Zena is an artist residing in Oakland, California. Her practice consists of various media, including large-format painting + drawing, print media, sculpture, and neon. Her current work explores the collaborative nature of life and death. The interdisciplinary series captures the emergence of life while death seeps into the image through decay or physical obstructions. She approaches the animal archetype as a central subject for many of her compositions. The characteristics of the animal are expressed through an exaggerated form, mutations, and extra appendages. These alterations imply the complexities and challenges the animal experiences in the attempt to thrive. Other works illustrate vivacious streams of consciousness images composed of smaller undulating life forms. Her heavily detailed work reveals a meticulous process that can be perceived as both meditative and ritualistic.
